History of Caldwell County,
Missouri
As written in the 1876 Atlas
of Caldwell County MissouriSalem, Missouri
At the
time of the change of County Seat, there was a flourishing village on West banks of Shoal
Creek, about two miles south-east of Kingston, known as Salem. It had two or three
stores and a hotel and made a vigorous effort to become the County-town, but without
success. The location of the County Seat so near it was its knell. It has now an existence
only in name.
