History of Caldwell County,
Missouri
As written in the 1876 Atlas
of Caldwell County MissouriKansas Troubles
At the
time of the Kansas difficulties, Missouri was a slave State, and many slaves were owned by
citizens of the County. The sympathies of the most of our citizens were with the
pro-slavery men in the effort to make Kansas a slave State. A company under the command of
Dr. S.T. Bassett went to Kansas to help the pro-slavery party vote a constitution,
authorizing slavery upon the people of that State. The Doctor caused it to be loudly
proclaimed, that it was a part of his mission to visit John Brown and his friends at
Ossawatamie, but the fear of unpleasant consequences caused a change of programme and
induced him to forego that pleasure.
